Argos Terrestrial Transmitters (TAW)
Argos only, without GPS (does include VHF)

TAW-4210-3 Transmitter
TAW-4210-3 "Argos-only" model on a butyl collar with CAST-4 option

These older, Argos-only models without GPS have generally been replaced by GPS/Argos, GPS/Globalstar, and GPS/Iridium models. All of the models below also contain a VHF transmitter.

The battery life estimates above are for the Argos portion of the collar and are calculated using Telonics Product Programmer; assuming temperatures of 0°C and 4-byte Argos transmissions 8 hours per day with a 60 second repetition period. The VHF transmitter is powered by a separate battery, with its pulse rate and schedule typically adjusted to match or exceed the estimated Argos battery life. These are examples only, with many other options possible. Please consult with Telonics for assistance determining what would work best for your application.

Standard power versions are 500 mW typical; the high-power "H" versions are 800 mW typical. Reduced power versions are also available with ~400 mW output power and ~22% increased life compared to the 500 mW models.

Key Features

  • These operate through the Argos system. Positions are determined by Doppler-shift in transmitted frequencies as received by the satellite. These units do not include GPS receivers. Positional accuracy is frequently several hundred meters to a kilometer or more. Users must apply to utilize the Argos system, and will be assigned ID codes and repetition periods.
  • Argos satellite are in near polar orbits, and have the most overpasses and cumulative time visible to the Argos PTT on the animal near the poles, and the least number of overpasses and cumulative time visible near the equator.
  • Argos and VHF scheduling can be programmed as a continuous intervals, or to change over time (e.g. seasonal changes where monitoring might be more or less intensive at certain times). These units have two battery packs, one for Argos and the other for VHF.
  • Transmissions can contain a mortality flag (which relates to whether there has been movement detected by an accelerometer within a user-defined period) and a low-voltage flag (which indicates the battery may die soon).
  • Temperature sensing and activity sensing is also available. All sensor data collected is stored-on-board the unit, thus if the unit is recovered, stored data can supplement what was transmitted. If the transmitted data results in longer than the 4-byte Argos minimum message length that would reduce battery life.
  • A real-time clock and calendar controls all timing functions. All timing is programmed using Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
  • Users can program or reprogram the units through use of Telonics Product Programmer (TPP). TPP can be used to obtain estimates of battery life under various possible programming scenarios prior to deployment.
  • Data are processed using the Telonics Data Converter (TDC), which provides complete data decoding of Argos DS files and supports complete memory downloading. TDC provides a comma separated value (csv) output file with time stamps for all data collected. TDC can also be run in the "batch mode" for hands off operation. TDC allows you to plot Argos locations with Google Earth.
  • Units can be refurbished to their original condition at the factory.
  • A magnetic switch allows users to turn each of these configurations "on" or "off".
